Acting Tips

April: Who am I?

What makes you actually you?

Kristina KaylenWhat do you look like? Most writers, producers, and directors already have an idea of how each character looks. Are you a blonde or a brunette? What color are your eyes? How long is your hair? Do you have glasses or contacts? Do you have olive skin or pale skin? Each of these characteristics can appear to be a small part of what makes you actually you and yet a huge part of why you are cast.

When auditioning for a role, you may want to ask what hair color the casting director is looking for. A few years ago I was talking with a casting director and they told me every actor should consider taking multiple headshots with different colors of hair (brown, blonde, brunette…).

Have you ever watched a film where two actors looked really similar and it confused you? Casting directors want to avoid having two many blondes in the movie or two many people with dark curly hair, etc.

Lining up the headshots of each highest potential actor the casting director will compare the images to see who looks good together. If you give the director some options on your looks you may have a higher likelihood of being cast. Maybe they are only looking for someone with glass? You can buy a nice pair of non-prescription glasses for $5.00 from Walmart. It might be worth the investment. =)

Lastly, consider what age you are auditioning for. Sometimes just picking the right clothes can make you look older…or younger! Is this character an athlete, a business man, an artist, a musician? Dress to be that character.

So, who are you?

Thanks for reading guys and God bless on your auditions!
